Project #40 - Re-wiring to get wireless thermostat working...

So we purchased a wireless thermostat last winter and as the weather is so nice - thought we've spend the afternoon re-wiring that, rather than mountain bike out to a nice pub and sit in the garden drinking beer. :-S

You can find everything on the internet... this diagram was the final aim...

... and in real life it looks like this:

Then when you turn it on it all (miraculously) works and you can move this wireless thermostat around the house for when that winter weather moves in. Rob's already vito'd me putting it at 27oC and carrying it around with me.

Project #39 - Front Garden (again)..

... it seems like 5 minutes ago that i was doing this - but i guess it must have been last year. It takes AGES and is hard work. I guess it looks "kept" now..

Project #38 - Jen's Room...

So we finally started work on "Jen's" room. Not too sure exactly what the end result will be here as i think we might have to make some decisions that affect kitchen choice too. This might be the trigger for kicking off the kitchen project - not sure i want to do that prior to Halloween. Not sure i want to do it full stop, i'd rather a magic kitchen fairy came in and completed it (including decision) for us.

 Radiator off....

A quick check into the hole - yep - nothing in there. Maybe a spider or two.

Stair support schmair support. :-)

Project #37 - The En Suite

Actually progress on the en suite... The replacement for everything arrives next Tuesday. Work planned to start on August 20th. We aren't going to try and do anything too crazy, just replace what's there & make it look sort of like the others. We do need to get someone in to plaster though - really looking forward to that. :-)

Escaping again this weekend...

Reference this last year: http://chrispie33.blogspot.co.uk/2012_06_01_archive.html we quickly realised that all the cool kids customise their canoes. So - in prep for this weekend's adventure... the customising begins...

Excuse "death" in the background of these photos, I generally forget he's there these days... And yes, it is 23:36 on a school night. Hoping the second side takes less time as we also have to pack tomorrow evening, then load the car up Friday morning before going to work. Can't see much work getting done. Ha!

Project #37 - The En Suite....

... well - see below for progress on the en suite....

https://vimeo.com/66008632

.. Yep - nothing to do with the en suite at all. Lack of progress is more accurate. And - to add to the lack of progress we are focusing on sorting out the canoe for it's first trip down the River Wye this weekend. Fun! :-)

Project #36 - The cans..

Having spent considerable money / effort / time to transport four excellent souvenirs with the intention of planting some plants that - according to the internet - even I wouldn't be able to kill, it only took 10 months to get round to completing. Time will tell I suppose... .

Project #35 - The bench!

One of the many thing's that's been on the list for a while - a bench! In theory, when the sunshine comes, we can sit out on it and drink coffee / cocktails / a cold beer. Bring on the summer!

Project #34 - Spring clean of garden..

Well, I think the before and after shots tell the story of the garden very very well...

Before:

 After:

...yes - that's correct - after almost three hours none stop work, it looks.... exactly the same... pppfff. Awesome.

Project #33 - Additional lights...

How was the last update in October?! Wow - the last couple of months of last year flew by. We didn't do anything major on the house (we did go to Chicago & New York) and then Christmas came and went.

So - latest project - which shows the advances in Rob's DIY skills, is the spot lights in the lounge. No before photos, no during photos, no mistakes (none caught on camera anyways). And, the whole job completed in under 24 hrs. I'm seriously impressed.

See below:

Project #32 - Update...

So - MASSIVE progress this week... AND THE FRIDGE IS MOVED!! Which kind of makes it really feel like Hallowe'en (since that's where the fridge goes for Hallowe'en usually). Anyway - see below!

Just a quick reminder what it did look like....

Project #32 - Update...

Coming along slowly but surely (and not so slowly as the upstairs! Bonus).

Breaking news this evening, after work DIY finally paid off with the sighting of....

... yes - a hedgehog. Very cool.

Plumbing - check, tiling - check (on the wall you can't see), painting - check... Now onto flooring. I've already hurt my finger, i think it's going to be a "black nail" look. Nice.

Project #32 - The downstairs cloakroom / new laundry room

Well - how quickly things progress in the beginning, all the old stuff gone - so now the difficult bit starts...

Escape #3: NORWAY!

Epic trip to Norway - sea kayaking by ourselves in the big old fjords.. excellent fun. Also managed to squeeze in some mountain biking and a hike or two.

What a great trip...

Update: Project #30

In between canoeing weekends (and a week escape to Norway - that to follow) we have actually finished (all but minor details) project #30 - THE BATHROOM. Finally. Nice huh?

Update...

... well a lot has happened since July 8th - namely, we lost the laptop for about 6 weeks. Booo....

Anyway - this is what's happening today whilst i update:

So - apparently we've started the downstairs bathroom... not a completely agreed next stage - but i guess we need to start somewhere... again.

Escape #2 (no, the bathroom still isn't finished)

Well - come rain or shine we were off this weekend... rain it did, but, there was a lot of shine too - and it was warm too - took my jeans in case i got cold in the evening, but spent the whole weekend in my shorts...

There was a lot of packing and planning and use of new stuff that we were able to purchase with the wedding present contributions… The blue barrels we picked up the other weekend down in Symonds Yat, which were a total find as they fit perfectly in the middle of the canoe!

Started in Tonbridge with a "car recovery", Rob & car parked at Allington and canoe & myself left at Tonbridge with a taxi connecting the two! There was a very nice man at the start who kindly pointed me in the correct direction. You can’t really see from the photos but there wasn’t really a current to the river at all, we would have looked pretty stupid going the wrong way so I thought it best to ask!!

The river has had some major renovations in the last few years to fit the canoe / fish pass, which means you can go down around the lock without having to portage the canoe – this bodes well for us because we had a whole bunch of stuff with us.

The canoe pass’ were the most fun!! Little nerve racking, but overall, a little like a log flume. They of course look bigger when you are eye level with them; the photos don’t do it justice!
We stopped for lunch at Eldridges Lock (unfortunately the map doesn’t show the whole trail… can’t find a full map).

What we should have done was stay at Oakweir Lock – which would have been very nice (see photos of the really fun canoe pass!) – but we decided to press on because we didn’t want too much to do on the second day.

The plan was to stay at Stoneham Lock – which is disused – but it looked awful, and there were a few bottles about, the grass wasn’t cut, graffiti about etc – so I wasn’t that happy staying there. The options were paddle back to Oakweir lock (involving 2 portage up the locks we’d passed) or head one much much further down to Burmbridge camp site. Which is off the map. A long way!! We did that though and it worked out well as the campsite was nice (very quiet, just two other people) and we had a nice dinner, few beers, then a great sleep as we were so tired! Dinner was a very tasty orange, lemon & ginger chicken!

This was the Hogwarts Express. Bit random.

We both woke up really early (didn't know it was that early as neither of us took any sort of time keeping device (later realised my camera has a clock on it)) but at 6:30am we had breakfast, but waiting for the rain to subside and then leave (which ended up being about 9am).

Saw some very cute signets, didn't want to get too close...

Very nice house on the river!

Allington Lock - which was the finishing point... we ended up finishing around 12, so just in time for lunch in the pub! :-)

Can't work out why we are upsidedown, or how to turn this around without editing the original photo...

And of course, the weekend can't finish without a mention of the rain. It was actually very nice - the rain did not put us off at all - and apparently the river is quite busy, so it was nice that i think the rain kept people away! We both had wellies / waterproof trouser & waterproof jackets and whilst it did rain a lot, it was actually really really nice - very peaceful out in the rain by ourselves!!

So - our first proper trip in the canoe and all in all a great success. We were missing only one thing.. good coffee in the morning - not sure how we forgot that... :-)
